The pouhana serves a dual role, both physical and metaphorical. Physically, it takes the form of a post positioned at the center of each end of a house, providing essential support for the kaupoku, the roof of the house. This structural support creates a secure and sheltered space for the community. In a broader sense, the pouhana symbolizes leadership and reliability.
